Arthur is not very good at saving money, so when he starts mowing lawns and walking dogs for extra money, his little sister wants to know why. After she overhears him talking about how he is going to break his bank she hides it from him to help him save his hard earned money, until she finds out that he is saving for her surprise birthday present. While working hard and saving money to buy a present for his little sisiter Arthur gives up any opportunity he has to buy something he wants. He also has to give up time doing things he likes while he is working to earn the money.

Teacher Tips for Using this Book

Divide the students into small groups. Have the groups create posters about working, buying, and saving. The students can list reasons why people save, types of work people do for income, or things that people need and want. Allow the students to draw or cut out pictures to illustrate their posters.
