This book is about a boy named Ming. Ming has just moved to San Francisco from China to live with his brothers, Shek and Wong. The brothers have been working in America to send money back to their family in China. Wong is away working on the railroad when Ming arrives. Shek must also leave for a few days at a time to find work, so Ming is left to take care of the general store that the brothers run in Chinatown. Shek instructs Ming to not go past Stockton Rd, which is where Chinatown ends. While Shek is gone, Ming does go past Stockton Road and he meets a boy, Patrick, who becomes his friend. Patrick teaches him English and his Irish family helps to feed and care for Ming when Shek must be away. One day, a letter comes from Wong and he says that he will have to move east with other railroad workers, since their store is not doing well. Shek and Ming must then get more customers at the store, or they will have to close it. The problem was that the brothers were only getting Chinese customers in the store and they needed to be able to get more customers. Patrick helps the brothers to get more customers by making a sign in English that says General Store We Speak English. The brothers do get more customers and their store is saved, thanks to the help of Ming’s new friend, Patrick.
