By the Dawn’s Early Light
This is a beautifully illustrated story from the point of view of an African-American girl whose mother works from 7 PM – 3 AM. Family members know the single mother needs to work the graveyard shift to support the family but miss her. Mom is productive in the box factory and has friends there who work at specialized machines. While she is working, family members have jobs at home such as cooking dinner, washing the dishes, and doing homework. Everyone is productive in their own way.
