Ada Ruth’s mama leaves home to head up to Chicago since colored women are being hired to replace men who are off fighting in the war. Ada Ruth stays with Grandma while Mama earns some money to send home. While Mama is gone washing trains, Ada Ruth and Grandma console each other and find a new friend.
