Coolies
While many come to the United States because it is considered the “land of opportunity” some find opportunity and then realize how harsh of a society America is if one is not considered “white.” That is the case for Chinese Immigrants coming to the United States in this book “Coolies.” This is a great book for older readers because it gives them an insight on how hard the American Society can actually be. They will see and notice that the conditions the Chinese are working in are often times worse than the Americans and their pay is less too. While I don’t want my students to feel guilty, I just want them to be aware of the facts of life and this stuff does go on.
