Selected by Chairman Mao’s officials from among millions of children to become a dancer, Li’s new life began as he left his family behind. At the Beijing Dance Academy, days were long and difficult. Li’s hard work was rewarded when he was chosen yet again, this time to travel to America. He makes a tough choice when he decides to leave his country looking for a better life in the future. The opportunity cost of this decision is very high since he gives up living with his family. Li’s family as well as many others in the country, struggle to survive economic hardships living in a command economy.
