Leigh had written to his favorite author when in second grade, but now in sixth grade he again writes to the author to ask for tips on how to write a book. Mr. Henshaw replies with a list of question about himself for him to answer, and urges him to practice writing daily, perhaps in a diary. In the diary Leigh tells Mr. Henshaw about his problems, such as recently divorced parents, stolen lunches, changing schools, and a lost dog. As Leigh continues build his human capital through practicing writing each day, and getting more advice about writing, his skills begin to improve.
