God Bless the Child
This is a picture book interpretation of the song “God Bless the Child” performed by Billie Holiday in 1939. The illustrator Jerry Pinckney created images of a family moving from the rural South to the urban North during the Great Migration. The Artist’s Note explains the context and purpose, emphasizing how free public education as seen as the great equalizer to climb out of poverty. A CD of Billie Holiday is included.
