Becky is a 10-year old girl whose family emigrated from Russia to avoid being persecuted as Jews. Through Becky’s point of view the reader sees Becky’s life including the family’s crowded three-room flat in New York’s Lower East Side. Mama and Papa have a store under the flat, Becky’s brother is a newsie, and Becky’s seventeen-year-old aunt works in the shirtwaist factory. Becky goes to Public School 20, is learning English, and has responsibilities within the family.
