This book introduces the concept of bartering. Mr. Wallace comes into the classroom saying that he is hungry and wondering if he can have one of the student’s crackers. They talk about how it isn’t fair unless they make a fair trade. They then get into talking about how people used to barter before there was money. Finally they do an activity where one group gets a box of unsharpened pencils, one group a box of erasers and one group a box of sharpeners. They then have to barter and trade until all the pencils are sharpened and have erasers.
