Light in the Attic, A

Teacher Tips for Using this Book

The poem Mr. Smeds and Mr. Spats (pages 42-43) would be a great example for supply/demand, wants/needs, and the concepts of exchange and trade. Students could discuss the poem and their thoughts about each of the economic terms. They then could come up with their own surprising example of wants/needs or other term.

There are also several other poems in the book that would be fun for students to use – such as Overdues, which is about fines on an overdue library book. It would create great discussion about why fines are used and if they are effective.
