During the gold rush of the early 1850s, Jake and his father go west to pan for gold. When they find a nugget, Jake thinks he is going to get the dog he always wanted; instead, he ends up getting a pet pig. This pig, who he names Dog, seems to bring them lots of luck. They find corn seeds to plant and a goat to milk, which catapults them into a booming corn fritter business. By bartering their products, the new business provides them with everything they could need.
