Samuel Eaton’s Day
The story shows one day in the life of a Pilgrim boy Samuel Eaton in 1627. Samuel and his parents left England seven years ago on the ship Mayflower. Today is the day Samuel has been longing for: he is to help with the rye harvest for the first time near the village of Plimoth Plantation. The narrative and color photographs show Samuel’s clothes, food, responsibilities, and living conditions. Their neighbor Robert Bartlett will help with the harvest and will share in the family’s grain in return for his labor. Samuel finds the work hard and uses a sickle in harvesting. After working in the field all day, Robert and Samuel stop by the ocean to gather mussels for dinner.
