Striking it Rich: The Story of the California Gold Rush
Stephen Krensky; Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers 1996
This attractively illustrated book brings to life the Gold Rush to California in 1849 and the individuals who started businesses to support the miners. There was as much money to be made from the miners as from the mines. Entrepreneurs such as Charles Crocker started a general store in Sacramento, Collis Huntington sold shovels to miners, Mark Hopkins supplied miners with hardware, and Levi Strauss sold thousands of pants and work shirts.
