D. H. Figueredo; Lee & Low Books 2003
Alfredito and his parents are trying to travel to Abuela’s house for Christmas, but a civil war has made travel difficult. They can’t take the train like usual, so they barter with a farmer with a car and a bus driver in order to get to Abuela’s house. Set in Cuba during Fidel Castro’s rise to power, this book teaches about barter and interdependence, since the family needs several people to help them arrive at their destination. There is also information about Cuban history and culture.
